Unit 6: How collaboration shapes Independence

For unit 6, there’s two components, collaborative and personal, of which this post will be talking about my independent work.

My preceding work consisited of aquatic creatures in human environments. As a result of this theme, I created a piece that is partially an observational study of the year 2 painting studio. This raised questions of what effectively shows the concept of a journey and how can I apply it to my own work. The migratory imagery and the contrast with the man made setting also coincidentally linked to the climate justice principle of the Univercity’s proposed thematic principles. The show of forced symbiotic environmental relationships between the human and non human caused by the stark unrealistic fish-out-of-water theme makes direct commentary on the perosnal influence on nature and such.

Discussing with my tutor has bought up research points of which I will be looking at Matiss’s bowls of goldfish (which is an ethical misdemeanor in my view - no creatures should have to endure such a small environment), fauvism and the Fin De Siecle artists of which the technical works fits well with the direction I want to take my use of colour language. Peter Doig was also brought up and his visual research into his subject’s nationality vs ethnicity is clearly an example of composiitonal factors i need to take into account. Looking at composition has also made me buy Andrew Loomis’s “Creative Illustration” which has let me analyse Doig’s work in greater detail and his composiitonal understanding has been demystified for me the way he centres his work around his subject by also taking into account background. Similar thoughts can be placed on Rene Daniels and his looseness with the brush and perfect balance of marks and negative space.

By working simultaneously on my independent work and grroup work at the same time, I hope to incorporate some of the sculptural elements of the group project into this personal project and I’m already branching out into different materials as part of my technical research before starting my traditional paintings. I want to work with canvas on wood and still need to see how to stretch it without stretching it to give that off the wall feel. This will make more sense as I continue on with the unit and upload more updates on her and Insta. I’ve begun fabric collages of some composition I’m experimenting with and want to see how this fits in with the greater themes that I’ve set for myself in Unit 5.

Looking forward to how this shapes up,

Kulsoma.
