Unit 6: how independence helps collaborative ideas
For unit 6, there’s two components, collaborative and personal, of which this post will be talking about my collaborative work.
As I’ve said in the previous post, my preceding work consisited of aquatic creatures in human environments. This project’s theme of Planet Earth was following a similar line of thought and so when discussing what kind of project we aimed to do, I put forward the idea as part of brainstorming and figuring out our stance as a group. We had a mixed group that heavily leaned on the side of sculpture students since this unit was a cross-course unit. So when one person suggested incorporating performance, and others put forward ideas of human influences on animal habitats/ecology/symbiotic relationships we stumbled upon the concept of a human aquarium.
We’ve spent the last couple of weeks working on these sculptures that mimicked underwater life whilst also being obscure enough to trigger the audiences imagination. A couple of our group is focusing on sound creation to flow with the performative aspect of our work. The performer is working with sound and sculpture to create a cohesive costume and choreography for the final outcome.
Discussing this with our group tutor enabled us to look beyond the scope of the College grounds and thus we’ve been messing around with locations and possible settings for this work to be applied to like indoor vs outdoor and claustrophobic environments vs open spaces but hopefully that should be finalised by the end of the unit. Inspiration has included TeamLab which our tutor then suggested us looking at The Botanical Mind exhibit at the Camden Arts Centre.
Looking forward to how this shapes up,
Kulsoma.
